Armenia: One of the Oldest Wine Countries in the World.

According to the Bible, Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat after the Great Flood. It was here, in the Armenian Highlands, that Noah planted vineyards, made wine, and drank from its harvest.
“On the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.” (Genesis 8:4)
“Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk…” (Genesis 9:21–22)
Armenia is considered one of the oldest cradles of viticulture and winemaking in the world. Archaeological excavations in the famous revealed the world’s oldest known winery, dating back more than 6,100 years. Archaeologists discovered wine presses, fermentation vessels, drinking bowls, grape seeds, and dried vines, remarkable evidence of Armenia’s ancient wine culture.
Armenian Indigenous Grape Varieties

Armenia is home to unique indigenous grape varieties that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Among the most famous are:
• Areni
• Voskehat
• Kakhhet
• Tozot
• Mskhali
• Lalvari
• Garan Dmak
• Kharji
• Chilar
These grapes produce distinctive wines with rich aromas, balanced acidity, and strong regional identity.
Another important wine event in Armenia is the Areni Wine Festival, held every October in the beautiful wine region of Vayots Dzor.
The Armenian Terroir

Despite its relatively small territory, Armenia offers incredibly diverse climate conditions and landscapes perfect for viticulture. Vineyards stretch from 420 meters above sea level near the Georgian border to high-altitude vineyards located at 1,750 meters above sea level.
The country’s volcanic soil, sunny climate, mountainous terrain, and pure spring water create unique conditions for producing elegant, mineral-rich wines with distinctive character.
The Revival of Armenian Winemaking
The modern era of Armenian winemaking began in 1887, when merchant Nerses Tairov founded the first wine and brandy factory in Armenia. Later, the factory was acquired by the famous Russian entrepreneur Nikolay Shustov, whose Armenian wines and brandies gained worldwide recognition for their exceptional quality and flavor.
During the Soviet period, Armenian winemaking flourished. However, many vineyards were destroyed during the anti-alcohol campaign of the 1980s. Since 2007, Armenian winemaking has entered a new era of revival and international recognition, with boutique wineries and family-owned vineyards bringing Armenian wine back to the world stage.
